Your Brain on Exercise

I don’t know about you, but I dread losing my marbles. That’s why I was impressed with a recent article in Nature Metabolism on the relationship between exercise and Alzheimer’s disease.

To summarize, the article explains how a hormone called “irisin” could decrease neuroinflammation. Irisin dramatically improves memory in mice through a positive impact on the hippocampus where memories are stored.

Here’s why I’m sharing this with fellow Healthragites: Irisin levels dramatically increase when we exercise. If you are searching for a reason to motivate your daily pursuit of 30 active minutes, consider the value of increasing your levels of irisin. You will be adding life to your golden years with a lower probability of Alzheimer’s and other related dementia.

So, get out there and do your thing. If you need more evidence, here is an abstract

  • Identifying secreted mediators that drive the cognitive benefits of exercise holds great promise for the treatment of cognitive decline in aging or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Irisin, in the circulating form derived from the exercise-induced membrane protein FNDC improves cognitive function.
  • Genetic deletion of Fndc5/irisin (global Fndc5 knock-out (KO) mice; F5KO) impairs cognitive function in exercise, aging and Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • F5KO mice (with diminished FNDC5 production capability) can be rescued by delivering irisin directly into the dentate gyrus.
  • Elevation of circulating irisin levels by peripheral delivery of irisin via adeno-associated viral overexpression in the liver results in enrichment of central irisin and is sufficient to improve both the cognitive deficit and neuropathology in AD mouse models.

So there you have it, Healthragites. Get moving to take control of your brain health and potentially ward off dementia and cognitive decline.
